MINES for Libraries results

The “Measuring the Impact of Network Electronic Service” (MINES) survey, created by the Association of Research Libraries, was administered at the OHSU Library over a 12-month period during 2013-2014. This survey collected data about the demographics of users and their reasons for using electronic resources purchased and licensed by the OHSU Library. The survey consisted of four questions that were asked each time a randomly selected Library patron accessed a journal article, book, clinical tool, or other electronic resource.

Results

A total of 4,115 responses were collected. Respondents reported using Library resources for coursework and teaching (37%), patient care (28%), research (24), and other purposes (11%). Respondents were faculty (26%), professional students (21%), graduate students (16%), undergraduate students (12%), residents and fellows (9%), other OHSU (3%), and non-OHSU (2%). They reported primary affiliations across the university, including the School of Medicine (42%), School of Nursing (20%), College of Pharmacy (12%), Hospitals and Clinics (10%), research centers or institutes (4%), School of Dentistry (2%), the Portland VA (2%), the Oregon National Primate Research Center (1%), and the remaining respondents from non-OHSU or other affiliations. The Library’s electronic resources are most frequently accessed off-campus (53%).

Conclusion

The primary patrons of the OHSU Library are faculty, students, residents, and fellows, who cite education as the top reason they use electronic books, journals, clinical tools and other resources. However, over half of the reported use of OHSU Library resources is in support of patient care and research. Thus, this report justifies financial support of the OHSU Library by the entire institution.
