Let’s Get Healthy! partners with Asian Health and Service Center

On August 20, Let’s Get Healthy! was part of the 10th annual Asian Community Health Fair at the Asian Health & Service Center in Portland for the first time. We brought our interactive education and research exhibit, where participants learn about their health by visiting a variety of stations as well as contribute their data to an anonymous population database.

Let’s Get Healthy! is excited about this new partnership with the Asian Health & Service Center! We had 203 people participate in the event, and we look forward to having even more next year.

In addition, we showcased several exciting new additions to our exhibit: a computerized breast cancer module that assesses awareness, readiness to be screened, and obstacles to getting screened; educational blood chemistry handouts with information about glucose, cholesterol, and triglycerides; and translations of all surveys and feedback materials into Chinese, Vietnamese, and Korean. Of the 203 participants, 78 went through in Chinese, 24 in Vietnamese, and 15 in Korean.

Our next event is in Hermiston, OR, for the annual Family Health & Fitness day on September 24. Maybe we’ll see you there!

About Let’s Get Healthy! We are an education and research program based out of CROET at OHSU that hosts free and fun health fairs in schools and communities. The exhibit includes many different stations: computerized surveys on diet, sleep, and cancer risk; body composition; blood pressure; blood chemistry; genetics; interactive diet and exercise exhibits, and Dance Dance Revolution. All stations offer automated, tailored feedback. In addition, participants receive a wristband that allows Let’s Get Healthy! to collect data anonymously in a database that is available to schools, communities, and researchers.

The program started in 2007, and now boasts 28 fairs, over 7000 participants, and over 350 volunteers! If you are interested in learning more, visit our website or follow us on Facebook. You may also sign up as a volunteer using our online form.

  1. Thank you! . After losing our health insurance we started taking advantage of the free health fairs in our area. It doesn’t fix the long term issues going on but it has been a great help to our family.

  2. Hi Mike, thanks for the feedback. I’m glad to hear that these types of events can be helpful to you and your family. We’ve noticed a lot of people are doing the same thing. It makes us happy to be able to help.

  3. I was curious if you ever thought of changing the structure of your site? Its very well written; I love what youve got to say. But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for only having 1 or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?

    1. Thanks for the feedback! Yes, we struggle with too much text, so thanks for the reminder to pay attention to that. We currently have a minimum requirement of one photo per blog, but we’ll try to up that in future blogs. We appreciate your submitting a comment.
