Dede Montgomery receives distinguished IH award

Last week, our Outreach Director, Dede Montgomery received the 2018 Distinguished Industrial Hygienist Award during the Northwest Occupational Health Conference in Bremerton, Washington. The award was presented by the Pacific Northwest Section of the American Industrial Hygiene Association. Congratulations, Dede on your accomplishment and dedication to occupational health.

Barb Epstein, OR-FACE’s Outreach Specialist presented the award and said a few thoughtful words about Dede’s contributions to Occupational Health:

“Prior to her taking a position at Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences, Dede was an active and  strong contributor to our profession through her training and technical abilities;  but it is the impact of her work at the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences that I am most familiar with and would especially like to recognize. Her leadership, bias for action, communication skills  and deep knowledge of occupational health have benefited our occupational safety community and, more importantly, the health and safety of workers in the Northwest and beyond.  Just two of many examples are: 1) her  identification and actions to address formaldehyde exposures in the beautician profession, and 2) promotion of Total Worker Health®. I especially appreciate Dede’s strong advocacy for bridging academic research and applied sciences.  I have personally benefited from the many seminars she has organized and delivered to our community where she ensured our knowledge was pushed forward through research being done at the Oregon Institute of Occupational Health Sciences and other research centers while also delivering practical tools,  safety professionals, employers and workers could use to improve the workplace.”
