DoD releases 2012 breast and ovarian cancer research funding announcements

Department of Defense logoThe Department of Defense (DoD) has released RFAs for its highly anticipated Breast and Ovarian Cancer Research Programs. Deadlines vary—find the full program announcements below for more information.

Breast Cancer Research Program

  • Postdoctoral Fellowship Award – Up to $100,000 per year for three years for mentored support of exceptionally talented postdoctoral fellows in pursuit of innovative, high-impact breast cancer research.
  • Idea Award – Up to $375,000 total to support conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will accelerate progress toward ending breast cancer. Innovation and Impact are the most important aspects of this award.
  • Impact Award – Up to $2 million over five years to faculty focusing on scientific or clinical breast cancer issues, which, if successfully addressed, will revolutionize the understanding, prevention, and/or treatment of the disease. Applications that focus on poorly understood issues of critical significance are strongly encouraged.
  • Era of Hope Scholar Award – Up to $2.5 million for five years for exceptionally talented and creative early-career scientists who have demonstrated they are the “best and brightest” in their field. Individuals should exhibit strong leadership potential.
  • Innovator Award – Provides senior faculty with the opportunity to pursue novel, visionary, high-risk ideas. Maximum funding of $5 million total for up to five years.
  • Clinical Translational Research Award – Up to $12 million total over a five-year period. Applications will be supported in two stages: Stage I will enable completion of preclinical translational studies and FDA approvals (if needed). Stage II will initiate and execute a clinical trial related to breast cancer.
  • Transformative Vision Award – Up to $12 million total over a five-year period for a collaborative, translational research effort, led by an experienced PI, to achieve a vision for dramatically affecting breast cancer prevention or treatment as quickly as possible.  Team must include consumer advocates who will be integrated into the planning and implementation of the research project.

Ovarian Cancer Research Program

  • Ovarian Cancer Academy Award – Supports the addition of new early-career investigators to the unique, interactive virtual academy that will provide intensive mentoring, national networking, and a peer group for junior faculty. Awardees will receive up to $725,000 total over a five-year period. Please note: This award requires institutional cost sharing of $50,000 per year.
  • Pilot Award – Up to $250,000 total for two years ($300,000 with nested predoctoral scholar) to support conceptually innovative, high-risk/high-reward research that could ultimately lead to critical discoveries or major advancements that will drive the field of ovarian cancer forward.
  • Synergistic Translational Leverage Award – Up to $500,000 in combined total direct costs for up to three years. Supports partnership between two investigators who will leverage existing human-based resources to address high impact research ideas or unmet needs in ovarian cancer. Must clearly define the synergistic components that will facilitate and accelerate progress in a way that could not be accomplished through independent efforts.
  • Teal Innovator Award – Up to $2.5 million total for five years to support a supports a visionary individual from any field principally outside of, but not exclusive of, ovarian cancer to focus his/her creativity, innovation, and leadership on ovarian cancer research. PIs must be at or above the level of professor.
